Funny Car Q3

SATURDAY NOONISH

Both solidly in the show Billy Morris and Tony Jurado chose to take a third shot to shuffle their spot on the ladder. These two were on a path to an unbeknownst Sunday climax.

Let the games begin. Morris runs a booming 5.687 at 257.38 (#4) with Jurado right on his ass with a 5.702 at 259.21 (#5). In just 24 hours this would be an instant replay.

Pair two pitted Nathan Sitko and Bill Windham.

Sitko improved with a 5.939 at 239.14 landing 11th. Windham hazed the tires and pedaled to a 5.96 at 214 but was DQed for oil. His earlier 7.083 at 128.59 held on for the #16 spot making this the slowest 16 car FC field in memory.

Taking their last shot was Geoff Monise and Matt Bynum.

Bynum’s 5.825 at 238.89 landed him in the 10th spot while Monise eked in #15 with a 6.691 at 117.71.

Already sitting #1 Bucky sent Bobby Cottrell out for another shot.

Jeff Utterback was just trying to improve which he did not. Had an issue on the burnout and pullled over to the wall.

Improve he did, Cottrell boosted his #1 numbers to a 5.595 at 261.27.

Drew Austin and James Day were next through the waterbox. One in, one out. Day was having a really rough weekend.

Austin hooked up to a 5.716 at 252.61 which was good for 6th. Day clocked a 5.81 at just 202.95.

Paired up again were Cory Lee and Dan Horan Jr.

Lee improved with a 5.961 at 247.57 moving into the 10rh spot while Horan had a throw-away 14.99. His earlier 5.708 at 253.61 left him #5.

Out next was Jeff Gregory and Mike Peck Sr.

Peck slowed to a 6.59 which didn't improve on his earler 5.765 and he stayed in the 6th spot. Gregory was short of Madness and ended the weekend with 8.000 at 117.41 leaving him in the 18th spot.

The last pair matched Brad Thompson and Cory Mac who wasn't even on the board.

Cory did finally post a time but his 7.187 at 127.26 but it was only good for the 19th spot. Thompson didn't improve and landed in the #14 spot with a 6.230 at 209.79.

The last pair was Chris Davis and Terry Jongewaard

Top Fuel Q3

Saturday Out of Light - The Coverage Is What It Is

Once again Q3 of top fuel was cast as the sun was starting to fade into the west. Seems to happen every year. Leading off was Tyler Hester and Pete Wittenberg.

Both cars made clean passes and would both race on Sunday. Wittenberg 4th with a 5.77 @ 243.19 and Hester #6 5.831 at 236.46.

Pair two pitted Jim Murphy and Brian Hall, it would be eventful.

Hall would thunder down the quarter mile with a career best 5.886 at 246.89 but it came at a cost, one really bad fire.

Hall walked away as the safety crew finished off the flames. When you see his firesuit below you'll go WTF!

Hall was qualified in the #8 spot but had a full nights work ahead of them. Murphy landed in the 5th hole with a 5.768 at 256.89.

Flash forwad to the Hall pit.

I've been in this sport for nearly 60 years and have never seen a firesuit so burnt up where the driver not only escaped injury but was ready to drive the next day.... providing he could borrow another suit. Which he did.

As the sun set even further into the west...

Back to Q3 it was Pete Kaiser and Brendan Murry. A have and have not.

Kaiser stayed #2 with a 5.654 at 259.96 while Murry was a DNQ with a 6.114 at 215.82.

Another DNQ, Shawn Bowen was out with Tyler Hilton who was sitting at the top of the class.

Hilton remained #1 at 5.633 at 241.02 whille Bowen's 6.100 at 165.94 was only good for #11.

Spacer

It was now or never for Rick Williamson. Nobody and I mean nobody thought the points leader (by two rounds) would go into the final qualifying session DNQ. In the other lane was Adam Sorokin who was solidly in the show.

Sorokin was flames up at the hit. Williamson had issues at the hit and it was game over. The door was wide open for Hilton. Sorokin would race on Sunday from the #3 spot.

Spacer

Two more last ditch efforts paired Dusty Green and Phil Ruskowski.

Green went up in smoke at the hit. Ruskowski clicked it early. Goin' home but great effort guys.

Spacer

Michael Anderson was still shaking down his beautiful new Corey Conyers inspired SBC car.

Anderson clocked a 6.094 at 204.23 which was close but no cigar. #10 of 15 cars.

Spacer

Frank McBee was the last fueler to make a hit and his 6.752 at 148.41 fell far short of making the field.
