As the old saying
goes, Behind every good man theres a good woman.
Or in this case, you just might say that, Behind every
good woman theres a good man. Better yet, why not
just say that over the course of their great careers, Jim and
Alison Lee always stood side by side, and together they pioneered
their way into the hearts of everyone in the sport as well as
re-writing the record books.
While this famous
husband and wife team is most noted for their string of beautiful
race cars and record-setting performances in the late 1960s
and early 70s, they were part of the drag racing
and hot rod scene long before that. At the start of drag racings
first full decade, the couple built and raced an A/Altered that
was as competitive as any car of its kind. When they started
making too much power with that car they did what so many of
their contemporaries did, they built a dragster. Their first
foray into the sports elite class was a 96-inch wheelbase
car that featured a 461 cubic inch Oldsmobile engine, a supercharger
and Jim Lee as the driver. Alison, as much of a car fanatic as
Jim, and maybe more, tuned it to times in the low 9-second range
at speeds over 168 miles per hour.
As the years
went on, Jim decided to get out of the drivers seat and
that would open up one of the most coveted rides in the sport
for a variety of drivers over the next few years, and by far
the most successful were Hank Westmoreland and Tom Raley. Together
they took the car to numerous national records and a number of
divisional championships. For his part, Westmorelands biggest
claim to fame was the fact that he made the quickest run in the
history of the sport, a stunning 6.88 at York Dragway in 1967.
Ironically, the car was heavier than it needed to be and the
record was actually established in the BB/FD class.
Tom Raley would
be next in line and he would take the car and the team to even
greater heights. A series of national records in 1969 and 1970
included an amazing pass of 6.53 that earned the team the number
one qualifying spot at the 1970 World Finals in Dallas and another
national record. And all the while, Jim and Alison Lee were tuning
the car as a team, and they were as good a team as there was
in the sport
then or now. For their prowess with the wrenches,
Jim and Alison Lee were honored by Car Craft Magazine as the
Fuel Crew Chiefs of the Year in 1971, the first duo
to be so honored. And later, after they retired to the farm in
Virginia, this great pair was inducted into the Drag Racing Hall
of Fame, a fitting tribute for any good man or woman.
